”Except being one of the pioneers for the revival of quilting in Scandinavia, Katriina Flensburg is acknowledged for her work of promoting the field of Art Quilt.Katriina is the founder member of the Scandinavia Art Quilt Group.
She was an initiator and the first president of the Swedish quilters´ guild, founded 1988 and a past time board member of the Swedish Textile Network. Her work has been exhibited both in invitational and juried exhibitions in Sweden, in the other Scandinavian countries, other European countries such as Austria, Holland, France, Italy and Great Britain and in Canada, USA and Japan. Her quilts have been featured in books, magazines and catalogues in Finland, France, Austria, Holland, Japan, Great Britain and USA.
Katriina´s teaching and lecturing covers the broad field of the quilting from the culture bound and/or ethnical traditions to the contemporary and free expressions. She teaches and lectures both in Swedish, Finnish and English.”
Some of you may remember that there will be a small group exhibition at Kulturcafét inspired by the artworks in the German Contemporary exhibition. Konstbrukets exhibition will open the day before German Contemporary, friday 5th of june, with some music performed by the artists from konstbruket. Konstbruket is a work placement for people with neurospychiatric disabilities who practice art. It is a day activity center according to the Act of Support and Service for people with disability – LSS – and a part of the system of liberty in the council of Uppsala. They have been approved by the County and the Council.
Themes and techniques in Swedish, and a sketch in the background
The artists have now started working on the exhibition. Today we thoroughly analysed the themes and techniques in a selection of pictures of artworks by the participating german artists. There will be different personal interpretations, some will probably be paraphrases but some will be inspired by the german artworks in a more subtle way.
Christopher Valenkamph made a quick first sketch that is a collage of all the artworks. If you look closely maybe you can regognize the lines from Mitko Sabev Ivanovs sculptures, a face from Ulrich Barnickels sculptures and some sheep by Bernd Baldus. This is only a first draft but I am sure that this dialogue will culminate in an interesting exhibition/Christina

”The art of Susanne Bockelmann is introverted in nature,
but not in a seclusionary manner, in confinement, as it
were; rather, it is on its own on open terrain. With a universal
gaze from which work is nurtured, the diversity lies in its
fields of expression: painting, color pencil drawing, scissorcutting
and collaged work, ceramic medallion-making, vessel-
making, linocut, etching. Multifarious, the appearance as
well: clearly outlined spatial densities and freely drawn lines,
the overlapping of that which loosely hangs and bends, the
scoring and how the glaze settles within it.
The beings that she paints reside within their thus-prepared
habitats quite naturally. Categorically freely-formed beings, relaxed
and impulsive, apparently tossed into life, into an existence
as a presence that cannot explain itself and, instead, remains
enigmatic like all impulses that one perceives. […] They are innate
with the naturalness that results from such an intuitive birth.
A rooting experience of fertility that confronts us in the
work of Susanne Bockelmann is the amalgamation of autonomous,
individual pieces into a consummate entirety; into
the collage that she assembles from that which is encountered,
in accordance to stimulation and significance, upon
the carrier surface.
It is an art in which the abstract and the concrete are
identical. Everything so entirely line and surface plane and color,
and yet, at the same time, so pulsating with identifiable life.”

Ceramic artist Bodil Gellermark also participated in the Clay & Straw project.
The following text is a translation from Bodils presentation in the 2011 catalogue:
”I have worked for thirty years in my own studio. The clay has fascinated me since childhood, when I played and dug on the shore with my grandma . Actually I ‘m still working in the same way. I often dig the clay out myself and process it afterwards, make clay rolls and build the shape up. I burn with sawdust in reduced atmosphere where you can feel the fire in the clay. I have performed several public artworks in schools in and housing areas. I also work with earthenware and burn traditionally in an electric oven with glaze. the whole time I have worked as an artist I have also been instructing pupils. To work with children and young people, sharpens the senses and helps me to think in new tracks.”
